Canadian Residential Schools
Canada (nationwide), Canada · 1883–1996
From the 1880s until 1996, the Canadian federal government funded and directed a system of residential schools for Indigenous children, operated in partnership with Anglican, Catholic, Methodist/United and Presbyterian church bodies, that forcibly separated an estimated 150,000 children from their families, banned Indigenous languages, and subjected many to physical, sexual and emotional abuse and severe neglect. Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission concluded the system amounted to cultural genocide.
