Beginning in 1939, Nazi Germany systematically killed institutionalized people with disabilities and mental illness under a program later named Aktion T4, after the Berlin address of its coordinating office. An estimated 70,273 people were killed during the program's centrally organized phase by August 1941; killings continued in decentralized form until the war's end, with broader estimates reaching 200,000 or more. T4's gassing methods and personnel were later directly transferred to the Operation Reinhard death camps.
